Whatever
kind of business you're in, you need to have information in order to
be successful. You also have to have the personal characteristics
that will allow you to succeed. It doesn't matter if you're a
farmer, a stockbroker, a plumber, a doctor, or an auto-mechanic. You
need the right information, the right business skills, and the right
attitude.
Fortunately,
you can get almost all, if not all, of the information that you need
for free online and you can keep it at your finger tips on your
personal computer or workstation. The Internet allows you to easily
be proactive, identify resources, and collect information before you
need it. When you need industry show dates, ad prices, media
contacts, lumber prices, predicted crop prices, insurance costs,
information on the latest technology, medical break throughs, flight
schedules, weather predictions, or distances from point A to point
B, you will have them. Entire business plans can be downloaded and
you can access most major universities in the world.
Business
skills are usually developed in one of two ways. The easy way is to
go to college. If you're smart and ambitious, an AA degree will give
you most of the basic skills that you need to succeed. Your struggle
will be much easier with a BSBA and even easier with an MSBA or PhD.
The hard way is through experience. Unless you're lucky and happen
to be in the right place at the right time, this way will take you
much longer and you will have to beat down doors that would swing
open to you with a college degree. You will normally spend many
years in the fringe instead of being welcomed into the mainstream.
Your choice has a lot to do with whether you like the wind at your
back or in your face. Many successful people say that the struggle
is most of the fun in getting there. Neither way guarantees your
success, but you can be successful either way. Some of the richest
people on the planet were dropouts.
The
thing that guarantees your success is your attitude. You may be born
with a good attitude or you can develop it by learning which thought
processes work and which don't, the hard way. If you are one of the
few lucky people who can learn by example, your struggle will be
shorter and much easier. Persistence is the most important personal
attribute that you can develop. People may be more aggressive than
you are and they may appear to succeed faster, but if they are not
also persistent, they will stop at the first road block instead of
finding a way around it. If you are consistently persistent in the
face of adversity, you will succeed, or as Winston Churchill
famously put it, "Never give up".
In the end, you will be successful because you
collected the right information, developed the right skills, and had
the winning attitude. Decide, plan, and execute.
