Education

Something
is amiss. What is wrong, is the source of endless
discussion and argument, but the fact remains that our public
education system is having trouble. Drop out rates that used to
start at 5% in better schools, now start out at 25% and climb as
high as 70%, in more deprived neighborhoods. Public education is,
most likely, the primary resource that made the United States surge
past much older countries as it developed, but parents are no longer
allowed the luxury of sending their childen off to school knowing
that they will receive an education. Constant vigil is
required.
In spite of the
problems with public education, opportunities for anyone
to gain an education are now more available and
greater than they ever have been. Distance learning or online
education centers are now abundant and on the rise. A single parent
no longer has to choose between spending what little time they have
left in the day with their children or spending it trying to make
their lives better by improving their education and skills. It's
still not a walk in the park, but it is much easier to accomplish
without having to worry about childcare and transportation
costs.
Workers with high
school diplomas can now get their AA, BS, and even Masters degrees
without having to leave the work force and facing the economic
complications that arise from doing so. Advancing your education and
your career no longer involves major planning and preparation. You
simply have to sign up for a program online and allow yourself
adequate time during the week and on the weekends to study and take
classes. Even military service personnel can take advantage of
college credits awarded to them as a result of their training and
experience and complete their college education from any place in
the world. Even major universities are now offering online
programs.
Online support centers
for parents who have chosen home schooling as the source of their
children's education are also beginning to pop up. Parents can now
readily access curriculum and research material that they need and
get questions that they might have answered by educational
professionals.
While the public
education system may be floundering, this cannot be used as an
excuse. There is really no reason why anyone can't get an education
if they really want one.
