Are you a
fashion plate with a wardrobe of items straight from the runways in
New York? Are you green wearing only cotton, silk, wool, and
leather? Are you covered with professional sports team logos in a
jock motif? Perhaps you're laid back with jeans and tee shirts or
you're darth in basic black. Maybe you're a rebel and pick clothes
that are intended to shock and assault the senses of the
establishment. Whatever it is, you have style and even though you
may not be trying to make a statement, however you dress, you
do.
Fashion
and our fashion choices change faster than anything else in
society. Yesterday's hippie might be seen lounging in a business
suit today. Some people change their style daily depending on their
mood when they wake up in the morning. There are fall fashions,
winter fashions, spring fashions, and summer fashions. Last year's
bell-bottoms and sandals make way for this year's mini-skirts and
high heels. Fashions that disappeared 30 years ago come back into
style. It is truly amazing that, with bodies that are similar, there
are so many different ways to dress them.
The way
we dress, however, is not the only thing that fashion affects.
Hairstyles, cars, our political causes, the technology we use,
management styles, our religions, our architecture, the sports and
games we play, the personalities that we portray, our and even our
speech come into and go out of style. The desire to be viewed as up
to date causes us to make these changes. In many cases, it's as if
we are dressing for and acting a part in a play or movie. Someone
with absolutely no need for a blackberry will carry one
around.
All of
this is partly a result of boredom, more a result of social
pressure, and mostly a result of the media. When we get bored and
feel like we need to make a change, our fashion or style is the
first thing that gets revised. The people we come in contact with
are constantly asking us if we saw the new BMWs, have a plasma TV,
rap, or heard about the endangered Tasmanian devils. Of course most
of us would never hear about these things if it weren't for the
media. An entire generation of girls can be heard mimicking Paris
Hilton's speech and who doesn't want the rugged unshaven look of
Indiana Jones?
All of
this is, of course, fun and preoccupying, but whatever fashion you
choose, make sure it works for you. There's something odd about a 70
year old runway model and a 75 year old man hot-rodding around in a
Ferrari with an open shirt underneath a sports coat rolled up at the
sleeves. Don't become a fashion victim.
