The
news is all about the banks and what must be done to save them in
order to prevent economic disaster from descending on us all.
Thousands of banks are on the verge of closing and their problems
have echoed throughout the business world as companies struggle to
find the capital to support their manufacturing operations or even
to make payroll.
Over
a trillion dollars has now been loaned and given to banks and
manufacturers to prevent their collapse. Their CEOs are constantly
on their telephones trying to arrange the next bailout and even
forced to use their cell phones in their Ferraris, while on the way
home to their mansions or penthouses, to explain to board members
what they are doing to get things back on track. They are harassed
and harried and they know that the next million-dollar paycheck they
get may well be their last. Even though it’s below 50 degrees
outside, the air conditioner in their Mercedes is blasting in an
attempt to stop the hail of bullets they are sweating. It’s not only
their jobs, but also their reputations that are on the line without
which they won’t be able to land the next job that will provide them
with enough personal wealth for that vacation home in the Bahamas
and the private jet to get there.
As
all of this drama is unfolding, Congress is paying scant attention
to the hardships that are being endured by the people who elected
them. Congress has plenty of money to rescue these playboys from
their management mistakes, but none to save the homes of the people
who voted them into office. As these bankers are whining over their
cell phones from the back seat of their limousines about the bad day
that they just had, Congress members’ loyal voters are being thrown
onto the street and forced to take up residence in their Fords and
Chevies if they haven’t lost them, too.
While
Congress members take calls on their private lines directly from the
movers and shakers of the banking industry, taxpayers living in the
tent cities that are popping up along canals, railroad tracks and in
vacant lots don’t have telephone service so they are out of site and
out of mind. Nothing is being done to rescue the retirement funds
that good Americans have worked all of their lives to save. Little
is said about the Constituents who have already taken their own
lives in order to provide the insurance money to their families so
that they can continue to have a place to live and finish the public
schools that they are enrolled in.
What
Congressional and Senate members don’t realize yet, is that it’s the
people who are enduring the hardships who have the power and they
are gathering together to change their government back to one that’s
for the people. Legislators who have voted to spend billions of
dollars in an ill-fated attempt to save banks and corporations while
they left their Constituents to suffer will soon find themselves
also looking for jobs.
