Articles: Finance - They Are Not Listening

Our elected public servants are no longer listening to us. The bank bailout is not the only issue. The vast majority of American citizens have been against our continued presence in Iraq for over three years, but we are still there. We are against amnesty of illegal aliens, more H-1B visas, and the continued shipment of our jobs offshore, but our elected officials are still trying to support these things with legislation. Almost half of us believe that 9/11 was an inside job, but no one is calling for an independent investigation. We want to wean ourselves from our dependence on foreign oil, but Congress and the Senate play with renewable tax credits like they are a volleyball. We are against more government growth and spending, but the government continues to grow and spend.   Who they are listening to is not clear, but it can only be surmised from looking at their lists of campaign contributions.

Over 90% of Americans called, emailed, and faxed specific instructions to their Congress members and Senators telling them not to vote for the $700 billion bailout bill and they did anyway. We knew that there was something fishy going on and we could see that the bill provided no relief for the people who had been conned into buying homes that they couldn’t afford were not being helped. We wondered how banks could be so irresponsible and, now we know that it wasn’t really the loans, but the derivatives that the banks were after. Visit this site for an explanation on how this all unfolded. ( ewebsmith.com/Finance/therealproblem.html ) We had been faced with this kind of fear mongering before and we weren’t going to fall for it again. Now, since the entire world has followed our lead, our Congress members and Senators have caused the futures and lives of every baby born in any country to be more uncertain and harder for generations to come.

Everyone knows the story now. Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rumsfeld fabricated intelligence on WMDs and fed it to Colin Powell so he could present it to the UN Security Council and get us involved in an illegal war with Iraq. There is no doubt that this is what happened. Still, even though they know that we know, the government is not admitting this. We won the war in Iraq in the first few months it was waged, but our military is still being used there to enable a transfer of wealth. The longer we have stayed, the more the Iraqi population has turned against us and the same people who celebrated their liberation are now against us.

Whatever your beliefs are, almost half of Americans believe that the government was somehow complicit in the vents of 9/11 and all of the people in the government know this. This has been very divisive to the American population, but instead of calling for an independent investigation so, that we could move on, one way or the other, our elected public servants have spent millions labeling good Americans, who doubt the government’s claim of innocence, conspiracy nuts. As we are now facing tough times, it would seem that the government for the people and by the people would want us united. Perhaps they don’t.

Since the vast majority of Americans are united against shipping our jobs offshore, amnesty for illegal aliens, and vastly increasing the number of H-1B visas, you would think that our elected public servants would heed our wishes. Instead, people like Menendez hold up votes on E-verify as blackmail in order to get 550,000 additional H-1B visas issued for 2009. When the finally did renew E-verify, anticipating a Democratic legislature and President, they only renewed it for six months. People like Feinstein and Craig have tried to get amnesty attached to supplemental Iraq war funding bills in the Senate to sneak it through. While saying that the economic problem is because the population is too big, Pelosi, the Democratic stalwart, has tried to strong-arm amnesty through the House. While our soldiers are dying defending the country, our legislators are trying to give it away.

As we are paying foreign oil producing countries $100s of billions of dollars a year for our own country’s pollution, Congress and the Senate are batting tax credits for renewables back and forth like they’re tennis balls. While they are doing this, the wind and solar power energy sectors that were booming at a growth rate of 30% per year are flattening out. The economic stimulus that these industries have provided has ceased. Projects and plans for expansion have been put on hold. Instead of expanding on programs that could benefit our economy and our environment, they are being killed. Perhaps, our public servants don’t really want the economy to be healthy, our air to be clean, or to stop sending our money out of the country.

Our national debt is now $13 trillion and growing. Besides being a really unlucky number, thirteen trillion dollars stacked one on top of the other would reach out into space over four times the distance to the moon. Every baby born in the United States is now born with $400,000 worth of debt. This is beyond the realm of irresponsibility and disaster. It’s sheer lunacy. We have not authorized our government to take on this much debt in our names and bring economic collapse upon us. YThe economy can not possibly survive when we owe more than this year's entire GDP to a private bank and foreign countries.

We have to put an end to this. We need to cause our government to start listening and to return to reality. We have to protect the futures of our children and our country. V
