Articles: Online Business - Building an Online Business

Building an online business, like any other business, is not quick and it is not easy.

There are many scams on the Internet, but many people come to the Internet with expectations that will not be met and leave after a short period of time and effort calling the enterprise they became involved with a scam when it simply would have taken more time and effort.

Unless you have and are willing to invest money, developing a business on the Internet takes an average of four years of hard work. The majority of moneymaking programs will work in this time frame. Unless you are exceptionally skilled and persistent, they will not make you the kind of money illustrated in the ads for the programs.

You will not begin to make a substantial amount of money on the web until you begin to pay for advertising on Google, MSN, AOL, and/or Yahoo. This means that you will initially lose money in advertising as you learn how to do it effectively, unless you already know how. You can reduce your losses and give yourself a better chance at success by reading and gaining information before you begin to do this.

After you have gained information, you need to decide which area of online business you want to participate in. There are basically four types. Network Marketing, unfortunately referred to most often as MLM, is the one most thought of and involves selling information, in the form of ebooks, and/or moneymaking programs. You can write your own book, which is the most profitable, or you can sell ebooks for some one else.

If you sell any product for some one else, you are termed an affiliate marketer. Almost anything that you can think of is available for sale through an affiliate program where you will get paid a percentage of what you sell. All you have to do is do a search for affiliate programs on any major search engine and you will find 1,000s of opportunities. A good affiliate program pays at least 8 percent and provides training and promotional resources.

The 3rd type of online business involves drop shipping.  With this opportunity, you sell what you decide to sell at the price you choose and pay wholesale prices to a wholesaler or drop shipper who ships the product directly to your customer after you have paid them. This type of business thrives on eBay but you can do it on your own from your own website.

You can also create a business around publishing ads on your website. Companies like Google and Yahoo will pay you each time someone clicks on one of their advertisers ads on your site. Normally, you will get paid five to ten cents for each click. Obviously, in order to make a living as a publisher, you have to figure out how to have many people visit your site.

Many online businesses use a combination of these things to succeed. Blogging has become one of the most popular ways to do this. Many bloggers sign up for affiliate and ad publisher programs and include links and ads on their web pages. They may also write a book and sell it from their blog and on eBay and ClickBank.

Whether any of these businesses succeeds is not determined by the business. It is determined entirely by you and how much you are willing to learn, how much effort you are willing to put in, how persistent you are, and how intelligent you are.

The Internet is one of the last, mostly unregulated, places where you can succeed if you have good ideas, work hard, and are a little bit lucky.
