When your
body is good and your mind is good, you are better able to help
others. When you are suffering, you are not only less inclined to
help others, the help that you offer them will not be as effective,
and there will be less of it. That is why, whether you’re a parent,
taking care of elderly parents, a professional in the therapy
or medical professions, or donate your time to charity, you need to
take care of you first.
There
are many ways that you may be able to improve yourself. Some of them
are obvious, like your weight or muscle tone, while others may not
occur to you like the amount of clutter that has worked its way into
your surroundings. You will be amazed at how much better you feel if
you just throw a lot of the stuff out that you don't use. Looking
into a closet or storage cabinet that looks organized and useful
will make you feel much better as will looking around and being in a
clutter free and clean home. Just this alone may give you the energy
to get started on improving other areas of your
life.
Another
fairly easy way to take care of yourself is to change your diet so
that you aren't consuming things that aren't healthy for you. Simply
put, you should try to avoid sugar, salt, alcohol, and fat. Other
things that you will want to wean yourself off of are coffee and
carbonated beverages. Carbonated beverages put carbon dioxide into
your system that your body will struggle to get rid of and there are
many things in coffee that are just not
healthy.
You
should always take the time to do the things that relax you and make
you feel at peace. This may involve reading a book, drawing,
listening to music, running, playing golf, or anything that allows
you to focus on something healthy that gives you inner pleasure.
This will help you relieve stress and you will find that you have
more energy and are able to make better decisions and get more done
in the other areas of your life. Don't let others make you feel
guilty about doing these things instead of trying to save the world.
When you get to what they want you to do, you will be much more
useful.
After you accomplish these petty simple things, you will be
able to begin to look at other areas of your life that you might
want to improve but require more effort. You may want to finish
college or go for your Masters. You may want to lose forty pounds or
more. You may want to learn a foreign language or start your own
business. All of these things and many other things that you want to
do are hard, but once you get the simple things done, you will have
the energy to do them.
