In
the past 10,000 years, how many governments can you name that
brought peace to their populations? How much longer do you want to
wait? In order to achieve world peace, we have to change our way of
thinking and stop, mistakenly, depending on our governments to work
towards peace. The essence of government does not lend its self to
peace, but the essence of human nature does.
We
are bombarded daily with news that tells us that, “The Chinese Say
This”, “North Koreans Do That”, “Russians Did This”, “Venezuela
Seizes This”, “U.S. Moves to Do This”, “Belgium Votes to Eliminate
That”, “Pakistan Refuses to Do This”, “Palestinians Do This”,
“Israelis do That”, “British Commit Troops Here”, and “U.S. Sends
More Troops There”.
The
truth, of course is that none of these people did any of these
things. Their governments did. One can argue that populations are
responsible for their governments, but when the majority of a
population is against the things that it’s government does, or
doesn’t live the things in question as part of their everyday lives,
you have to ask how much of the responsibility they share. Unless
you are related to a soldier, the idea that soldiers are off
fighting somewhere becomes something that seems removed from your
life.
Something
happens to a human being when he or she becomes a part of a
government and they begin to think in terms of how much better it
would be for their country if their country had control of what
another country has. They start to be compelled to attempt to get
other countries to do things differently in the face of
international resentment for the intrusion. They begin to think in
terms of conflict and the number of deaths in their country as
opposed to the number of deaths in the other country when the
conflict is concluded. They think in terms of soldiers instead of
human beings. They do not feel the pain that mothers, fathers,
spouses, and children feel when they lose a child, daughter, parent
or spouse. They don’t feel the pain as the fire from explosions and
bullets burns into our bodies just before we die. They do not feel
the hopelessness as our homes are flattened. More of them will die
than us, they think and things will be better. They rarely see the
bodies and they never feel the pain. They plot ways to create
conflict about for the good of their country.
The
vast majority of the people on the planet think only of working to
take care of their families, sharing fun successful lives with their
family and friends, and worshipping their god. They are happy that
they had the money to buy a new bike, skates, or baseball glove, for
their child’s birthday, or they were able to spend a little extra to
celebrate their new year with their friends. If their children are
clothed and their homes are warm, they feel at peace. Their quest
for prosperity only involves more of the same. It doesn’t even occur
to them to want the things that are in another far off land. They
are just like you and me, but they, too, are terrorized by daily
news bulletins that suggest that someone doesn’t want them to be
able to live their peaceful, happy, lives. When they go to war, it’s
because they have been led to believe that those they are fighting
against wanted it or caused it.
No
population wants war and no population wants to be in a war when
there is one.
Soldiers
do not start wars war and don’t want to be them when there is
one.
We
cannot wait another 10,000 years for peace. In order to stop the
cycle of violence, we have to resist constant attempts to make us
think of other countries in terms of what their governments do. We
have cling to the reality, in the face of an onslaught of
information that would have us think otherwise, that countries
consist of people who only want the same things that we do. The very
last thing that they want is to have their sons and daughters die in
some far off land or to have bombs and rockets rain down on their
homes. They would much rather share what they have and laugh with us
than kill us or have us kill them.
Waiting
for our governments to bring us peace is like waiting for a
government to enforce a constitution that restrains it. Peace and
governments are diabolically opposed to each other. If we want our
government restrained, we have to enforce our constitutions and if
we want peace, we have to bring it upon ourselves.
Fortunately,
we now have the means at out disposal, to share this message of
peace and overcome the tragedies that are forced on us by our
leaders. We only have to take a few moments out of each day to
contact a stranger in some far off land and ask them if they mind if
we work each day to take care of our families, share a fun and
fruitful life with our friends, and worship our god. Tell them that
we don’t mind if they do the same. We want peace.
When
we all know this and believe this, we will have peace. When our
governments become drunk with power, we can just take away the
keys.
