We love our
sports. They not only provide us with a sense of camaraderie with
other people trying to accomplish the same thing, they also provide
us with an opportunity to meet a challenge and succeed. Many would
say that, as animals, we are instinctively combatant and competitive
and sports allow us to satisfy those instincts
non-violently.
No one is
sure when physical competition began, but it is believed that as
soon as someone noticed that one person could throw a rock farther
than another, people began to compare their physical skills and show
acclimation towards the winner. The winner of course, instinctively
felt pride and satisfaction that felt as good as anything
else that they enjoyed. Cave art depicting archery competitions
dates to 30,000BC and more drawing depict early Mayans competing in
a game involving a ball. The enjoyment of sports also involves
personal satisfaction in one's own physical capabilities. Captain
Cook brought back tales of people surfing in Hawaii in
1785.
Many people
will spend hours alone shooting at targets, fishing with no one to
witness the big one that got away, and play golf by themselves into
the night while having no one to witness their hole-in-one or their
eagle on 18 to break par. What actually "gets" a person about golf,
surfing, bowling, or any other sport over another is a mystery. We
only know that, when we do good, we feel good and there is always an
opportunity to do better.
Along the
way, people began to notice that the people who did participate in
sports, whether they were the winners or not, seemed to do better in
other areas of their lives. They did better at their
jobs, in social situations, in school, were more
ambitious, and were more actively involved with society. These
positive attributes were not only associated with the athletes
themselves but also seemed to rub off on people who simply liked to
watch. What better training for a salesperson, who needs to be
aggressive, than to have played football. If you are planning
to go into one of the highly skilled trades like carpentry or steel
working, you had better be in good shape
first.
Sports are as
important in a child's development as reading, writing and math. In
fact, sports help children with their classroom education by
teaching them to focus on the task at hand and to not give up
when they face a challenge. If you want your child to do well,
make sure that they have an opportunity to participate in some
sport.
It's hard to imagine how to have so much fun any other way. So,
whatever your pleasure, let's get it on.
