Women and men are different. That
doesn't mean that they are unequal or that women can't do things as
well as men. It just means they're different. While men and women
share many of the same interests, different things are important to
women. These things are important and it's a good thing that they
are important to women because, otherwise they would be
neglected.
Like all oppressed groups of people, in
countries where women have been given the opportunity to fight for
their freedom and equality, they have taken their weapons in hand.
Where ever freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of the
press, and the right to petition for redress exist, they have won.
Unfortunately, keeping your freedom and equality once you have it is
an ongoing battle for everyone.
While many battles were won and women
were given the right to vote in several states starting in 1756, the
right to vote for women was often conditional. While the
Constitution does not mention race or gender while passing out
rights, women were not actually given equal status until 1920 when
the 19th Amendment was passed. It's rather bizzar that an Amendments
were required to grant slaves their freedom and women equal status
when one would think that all that had to be done was to enforce a
Constitution that spoke of human rights.
Women have accomplished much in a short
period of time since they were allowed to start trying. There are
now women working in all occupations at all levels. Many Congress,
Senate, and Cabinet members are and have been women. Major
corporations have chosen women to be their CEOs. There is no telling
how much more advanced the United States would be if women were
given the opportunity to contribute from the beginning.
This is not to belittle or ignore the
contributions that women made before they were granted equal status.
Think what you may, managing homes and raising children remains one
of the most challenging tasks in the world. For a person to be able
to do this while holding down a full time job is
incredible.
