Building an online business, like any other business, is not quick and it is not easy.

There are many scams on the Internet. However, many people come to the Internet with expectations that will not be met and leave after a short period of time and effort, calling the enterprise they became involved with a scam, when it simply would have taken more time and effort.

Unless you have and are willing to invest money, developing a business on the Internet takes an average of four years of hard work. The majority of "money making" programs will work in this time frame. Unless you are exceptionally skilled and persistent, they will not make you the kind of money illustrated in the ads for the programs.

You will not begin to make a substantial amount of money on the web until you manage to get a lot of visits to your website. When you can begin to pay for advertising on Google, MSN, AOL, and/or Yahoo, you will make a lot more, but you have to know how to place effective ads. This means that you will initially lose money in advertising as you learn how to do it, unless you already know how. You can reduce your losses and give yourself a better chance at success by reading and gaining information before you begin to do this.

After you have gained information, you need to decide which area of online business you want to participate in. There are basically 3 types. Network Marketing, unfortunately referred to as MLM most often, is the one most thought of and involves selling information, in the form of ebooks, and/or "money making" programs. You can write your own book, which is the most profitable, or you can sell ebooks for some one else.

If you sell any product for some one else, you are termed an "affiliate marketer". Almost anything that you can think of is available for sale through an affiliate program where you will get paid a percentage of what you sell. All you have to do is do a search for "affiliate programs" on any major search engine and you will find 1,000s of opportunities. A good affiliate program pays at least 8% and provides training and promotional resources.

The 3rd type of online business involves drop shipping.  With this opportunity, you sell what you decide to sell at the price you choose and pay wholesale prices to a wholesaler or drop shipper who ships the product directly to your customer after you have paid them. This type of business thrives on eBay but you can do it on your own from your own website.

Whether any of these businesses succeeds is not determined by the business. It is determined entirely by you and how much you are willing to learn, how much effort you are willing to put in, how persistent you are, and how intelligent you are.

You can earn small amounts of money, enough to pay for initial ad placements, through pay-per-click programs like Google Adsense and many smaller lesser-known sites. There are also many free promotional tools that you can use to get started.

You will find many of these tools along with free businesses and free books at my website http://ewebsmith.com. You can have access to the free books through this newsletter - http://ewebsmith.com/nl052707. Read the books, especially Brad Callen's books, before you decide on a business.

Beware. When anything costs money, the primary purpose is to take money out of your pocket and give it to someone else.
