I attended a web
conference not too long ago and I overheard two guys talking in the
men’s room. One of them said, “I got two grand off the net
yesterday. I guess I finally made it. It only took me three
years”.
At first I was
impressed that someone could make $2,000 in one day from the
Internet after only three years, but then it occurred to me. That’s
how these guys do it. They think of them as The Net. I spend a lot
of my time in Affiliate Marketing and I think of The Net as Them. I
think of Harold, Crystal, Samantha, Gerry, Art, Frank, and others
who have signed up in one of my downlines when I think about my
business. They think of these same people as The Net.
Without talking to
someone, I can sense the urgency in the way people sign up for
things and I can tell if it’s because they are excited about the
possibility of building their own online business or if they are
desperate and turning to “The Net” as a last resort because they
need money. I warn them that it’s going to take a while depending on
how hard they work and how much money they have to invest in their
free business opportunity. Invariably, I get a response something
like, “Maybe I could sell stuff on eBay real quick. Do you have any
eBay books you could give me?” I send them a book along with a list
of actual online job sites and I usually don’t hear from them
again.
If they were “The Net”
to me, I could tell them that they needed to plop down the remaining
available credit balance on their credit card and upgrade to Gold or
Executive level to get things moving faster. I could do this knowing
the numbers. They vary depending on whom you talk to but something
like one out of a hundred make any money on The Net. One out of a
thousand makes a more than a little money. One out of ten thousand
ends up making a living and it usually takes at least four years to
get there. If they were The Net, I could take their money until the
current “Razor”, “Bullet Train”, “Tiger Tail” or whatever Marketing
Program goes out of style or gets saturated. By then, enough Newbies
would be online to start all over again. You can’t think of Newbies
as people either.
I wondered if I was
being a sap about the whole thing so I brought the conversation up
as often as I could. It turns out, that most Affiliate Marketers
think the same as I do and most Network Marketers think of Them as
The Net and they think of type “A”s and “B”s. Anything but people.
Affiliate Marketers feel responsibility towards their downlines and
they think of retired military people, just retired people, work at
home moms, laid off people, and want to work at home people. So,
what is the difference? I’m here to make money. The Net guys are
here to make money.
I guess I want to make
money because They, my affiliates, make money. I want to feel
good about it knowing that I helped a mom stay home with her kids or
a retired couple get by a little easier.
Getting
paid for doing that is just about the best thing that could
happen.
